Fulton Elementary School: A Turnaround School
ABRAHAM LINCOLN PRESIDENTIAL MUSEUM—SPRINGFIELD, IL
Time: 8AM –2PM
Date: 12/02/09
A total of 53 seventh and eighth graders traveled to Springfield, IL to visit Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum as a culminating activity along with three teachers (Ms. Ingram-Holmon, Mr. Smith, and Mrs. Lonzo) and two parents (Ms. Leason and Ms. Banks). The students used the data gathered during this trip to write a comparison/contrast essay about the childhood of Abraham Lincoln and their own childhood. Some students were moved to tears and in awe by some of the exhibits.
The next day all of the students wrote thank you letters to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum Foundation for free admission to the museum. It was truly a once in a life time experience that will always be remembered. Special thanks to Mrs. Lonzo, Fulton’s Library Media Specialist for coordinating this trip for our students.
Shoot for the Stars!
Fulton's First Annual Science Fair was held in the gymnasium on Thursday, December 3, 2009, and there were 14 participants from 5th to 8th grade. The students' projects ranged in topics from anti-freeze, to turbines, to popcorn! Our winners from each grade were: Quianna R. from 5th grade, Room 308; Lucia R. from 6th grade, Room 311; Reyna M. from 7th grade, Room 210; Carolina M. from 8th grade, Room 209. We cannot wait for our primary and intermediate science fair in the spring of 2010. Start experimenting! Special thanks to Ms. Needham, Fulton’s 6/7 grade Math & Science Teacher who coordinated our first Science Fair at Fulton.
Santa Claus @ Fulton School
On Thursday, December 10, 2009, students at Fulton received a special visit from Santa himself. Every student from Pre-K to 3rd grade took a picture with Santa. Due to the fact that Santa loves our students at Robert Fulton School, he returned on Friday to give gifts our students. Along with the gifts from Santa, students took with pictures home to share with their parents. Our students were excited and felt special that Santa took time out of his busy schedule to spend two days with them before Christmas.
SAM (Student’s Attendance Matters)
In an effort to reach our attendance goal of 95%, Robert Fulton School has developed SAM (Student’s Attendance Matters). Students were selected for SAM because they have 4 or more days of unexcused absences from school. The purpose of SAM is to encourage our students so that they realize the importance of school. Our students cannot learn if they are not in school. In order for students to continue in SAM, they are expected to be in attendance each day.
Here are some highlights from SAM:
- Students will have lunch with Principal and Assistant Principal once a week
- The Attendance Team will monitor students’ daily attendance
- Only students with perfect attendance for the week with no tardies or early dismissals will eat lunch with Principal or Assistant Principal
- At the end of each month, students will earn a pizza lunch if they have perfect attendance
